Growing up in Mathare
Basile lives with his mother and three siblings in the heart of Mathare, one of Nairobi's largest informal settlements.
His mother works long days selling fruits and vegetables at a roadside stand so her children can stay in school and have food on the table. Every day requires sacrifice, but she continues working hard because she believes education can change her children's future.
A mind that loves to learn
Mathematics comes naturally to Basile. He enjoys solving problems and often finishes his work before many of his classmates. His love for learning fuels an even bigger dream — to become a doctor who serves children and families in his own neighborhood.
Childhood filled with joy
